Ghost in the Shell 2.0 es una remasterización/remake del clásico original dirigido por Mamoru Oshii en 1995, basado a su vez en el manga de Masamune Shinow. Esta nueva versión se estrenóen los cines de Japón en verano de 2008 para conmemorar la salida de The Sky Crawlers.

Entre las mejoras que incluye: redibujado de la animación 2D y nuevas escenas y elementos completamente CGi (3D), así mismo, la banda sonora fue compuesta de nuevo por Kenji Kawai, encargándose de la remasterización del sonido el ganador del Oscar Randy Throm, cuyos trabajos incluyen «Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence» o «Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within». El doblaje japonés también fue regrabado incluyendo cambios en el guión para adaptar los términos coloquiales y la jerga informática a un contexto actual, y reemplazando además la voz del «Titiritero», pasando del actor Iemasa Kayumi en la cinta de 1995 a la actriz Yoshiko Sakakibara (Harraway en GitS2 Innocence, Yoko Kayabuki en GitS2 SAC). El argumento se mantiene intacto: Año 2029. En una enorme ciudad asiática, una mujer robot policía -cyborg- investiga las siniestras actividades de un misteriososo hacker, un supercriminal que estáinvadiendo las autopistas de la información.
